Core Beliefs

Our core beliefs are those things that we learned at an early age that are often unconscious.

Many psychologists and authors write about core beliefs and how they came to be.

Wayne Dyer talks about them in "Your Sacred Self". He calls them the 6 ego beliefs as they are a result of your ego's response to life going on around you.

From his book" The Power of Intention"

  1. I am what I have. My possessions define me.

  2. I am what I do. My achievement define me.

  3. I am what others think of me. My reputation defines me.

  4. I am separate from everyone. My body defines me as alone.

  5. I am separate from all that is missing in my life. My life space is disconnected from my desires.

  6. I am separate from God. My life depends on God's assessment of my worthiness.

Charlote Kasl talks about them in her book "If the Buddha got Stuck"

  • I am defective
  • I am shameful
  • I am unlovable
  • I am powerless over my life
  • I am unwanted
  • I will always be abandoned.
  • My body is defective or shameful
  • I am worthless
  • I am inadequate
  • I don't exist
  • I am alone

Gregg Brandon calls them "Universal Fears" and he narrows them down into 3 categories:

Universal fears

  • Separation and Abandonment

  • Low self worth

  • Surrender and trust

The basic theme of core beliefs is that we are not good enough so we are not lovable or we will always be abandoned. These core beliefs are the basis for everything we do - conscious and unconscious. If you don't know what your beliefs are just take a look at what you have in your life and start asking 'what would a person believe who has this in their life?'

The form the basis of our programming. All of our programming creates our thoughts which lead to feelings. Our feelings are what lead us to take action. Our actions are what lead to the results that we get.

Since it is often impossible to really see our unconscious thoughts because they are after all unconscious, the way to become more aware of them is through what you are feeling. Your feelings will tell you what you are thinking. Anything other than joy and happiness will tell you that you are thinking one of these thoughts that are coming from these core beliefs. To change what you are feeling - change your thinking.
