Changing Beliefs

Changing beliefs is really what the whole law of attraction and "The Secret" are about.

Everything that you have in your life in the way of money, relationships, prosperity, wealth, debt, health is a result of your core beliefs about yourself. The hard thing to understand is that these beliefs are unconscious meaning you are not aware of them at all which makes it really difficult to change. It is sort of living your life like the movie "Ground Hogs Day" where the same day keeps repeating itself over and over and over again like a vicious cycle.

Your beliefs are created at an early age by the way you were cared for by your parents, family, friends and significant teachers or religious leaders who were in your life. There are many different books and explanations on how beliefs are created and how you can change them in the resources section.

From studying them and doing my own personal work, what has worked best for me is to track my thoughts and results so that I can begin to see more clearly just what it is that I am thinking as a result of these false beliefs. You can do it for every aspect- money, relationships, work, wealth.

Tracking your beliefs can be enhanced by working with therapists and financial advisers who specialize in uncovering your beliefs. There are some personal and business coaches who are also able to help you do the same thing.

I first learned about tracking from reading a book by Susan Gregg called The Toltec Way: A Guide to Personal Transformation

The way she suggests tracking your thoughts is through journaling for a year on various things to discover the relationship between your thoughts, actions and the results that you are getting.

I also have found that the outline for changing your beliefs about health that is proposed by Alexadra Gayek in her online class 'The Science of Being Well" explains the process the best.

To change your beliefs you take the same steps you would as if you were in a war and wanting to stop it. You want to build a garden. The war zone has limited resources but people are still functioning. Trying to focus on peace is too hard because all of the chaos -uncertainty and danger you can't even think of making a garden. When the war has been going on for a long time, you don't have much hope.

  • First you have to decide you want to stop the bombing or attack. Stop beating yourself up. Stop those thoughts of doubt and negativity. Set aside your resistance.

  • Cease fire - stop the attack.

  • Ask for help - asking for help is often one of the hardest things to do. We all think we can go it alone or have to go it alone without realizing that others are just waiting there for you to ask. Get supplies and resources.

  • Rescue people in immediate danger. Make a plan on where to start.

  • Build a new foundation.

Using this process is not just as simple as it sounds and most often doesn't happen overnight. It is just that a process and there will be ups and downs, setbacks and achievements. Coming to know that there is hope is part of it.

Being in relationship with others who are studying the same thing can be helpful.
