Beliefs

Beliefs are the core of our thoughts and actions. I am not talking about things like religious beliefs but rather your personal beliefs about who you are. I am talking about what you think about yourself as a person -what you believe about yourself. It is more about your self esteem and who you are. What you believe is the basis for your reactions and perceptions to life. They are developed at an early age in everything that happens to you. Your family, friends, school teachers and everyone you meet have a part in forming your beliefs about yourself. When you are told you can't do something, you develop the belief that you aren't a good person. When you are told to stop crying or stop what ever feeling you are having, you develop beliefs around what people may think of you when you have feelings. When you are told things like "you can't do that" or you are no good at that" you start believing it at the deepest level of your being and it gets ingrained in your neural network.

You then start reacting rather than responding to your environment. You start thinking that the world is against you and your life was meant to be difficult. You stop dreaming and desiring. You start just taking what life gives you rather than creating the life that you desire.

If you don't know what you believe, just start thinking about what you have or don't have in your life and start asking what would a person believe who has that in their life.

Our beliefs are conscious and unconscious. It is the unconscious ones that really keep you stuck. The difficulty is in learning to become aware of your unconscious beliefs so that you can begin to change them. We aren't even aware of them but they are the cause of the direction our thoughts take in any given situation. 10 people can look at the same thing and see different things and this is due to your beliefs which create your perspective on the world.

Uncovering your beliefs is a matter of becoming more aware. The challenge is that they are unconscious so it isn't really that easy. It often requires developing a certain amount of self esteem so that you can begin to let down your defenses and see what is inside the walls you have up. It requires a commitment to yourself and desiring something better for yourself. It requires that you put yourself out in the world and experience life so that you can start to see what choices you make and how you learn from your experience.

Your feelings are also another way that you can learn to become aware of your beliefs. To look at your beliefs about money, what do you feel when you think about someone who has a lot of money like Oprah or Bill Gates? What is the feeling you get when you drive by someone in a $100,000 sports car or a mansion? To look at your beliefs about love, think about what you do feel when you think about having a loving relationship. To look at your beliefs about success, what do you feel when you think about successful people? To look at your beliefs about health, look at what feeling comes up when you think about all of the people in hospitals or hear about stories on the news of people being sick?

The idea of looking at your beliefs to change your situation and life is not new. The movie "The Secret" has brought it out into the mainstream. Many others have come before and talked about the process of uncovering your beliefs.

If you take a look in the resources section, you will find many different books and authors on the subject. You can also find some references to Free Ebooks in the History Section.
